5 Self-Care Practices That Save Me Money

Hi guys, I hope you are all having a fantastic week. This week has been going by so slow for me but I’m taking advantage of it and have been on a roll writing my June posts in advanced 🙂

My husband likes to call me a ‘lifestyle enthusiast’ and I think it suits me well. Beside my obvious love for fitness, living an overall healthy lifestyle is my passion. That means relationship in all aspects of life: the Divine, your self, others, and even with money!

I have been a house-wife since I got married and the greatest test for me is trusting my husband’s ability to provide for our family. There have been some ups and down, trial and errors; nevertheless, I’m positive that we are slowly but surely making better choices. There was a period in my early marriage life where I would postpone some things I did to take care of myself. My hair was a shapeless mess and I did not feel good about myself at all. I kept delaying my much-needed revamp to “when we had more money” or when I could finally work. Mind you, when I was a teenager I used to dye my hair myself. However, working and getting my own money opened the way for me to get it done professionally, paying hundreds of dollars, and I never looked back. Months passed by and I just felt worse and worse. Arguments between my husband and I were rampant, I was depressed and vulnerable to self-harm. My husband always reminded me that I needed to love myself and love myself more. Deep in my heart, I knew that was the case. One day, I looked a myself and decided I will take care of me again.

Most of these practices, are habits I’ve been doing for years even before I was married. But now that I have a family, my tendency to be frugal is something I’ve come to appreciate even more.

Here are 5 things I do to care for me that save me money:

  1. I dye my own hair –  I started dyeing my hair regularly when I was 16 years old. I have so much fun doing so! I feel so at peace and the box instructions are very easy to follow!
  2. I cut my own hair – I only started this last year and will probably carry it out until the day I decide to have really short hair. I’ve had a number of bad experiences with other people cutting my long hair that it has been difficult for me to find a trusted hair dresser. My last professional cut was in November 2014. My hair grew out and was in dire need of a trim that I decided to take it upon myself and cut my own hair.  I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials that helped me become comfortable in doing it so I mustered all the courage I have and gave it a shot. Afterall, I’d rather me mess my own hair up so I have no one to blame but myself. Thankfully that’s not the case because I LOVE IT. I’ve cut my hair twice since then–cutting off as long as 6 inches and I’m so happy 🙂
  3. I use home-made remedies for health and beauty purposes – some of my trusted and go-to home remedies are as follows:
    – Lemon ginger honey tea to cure the flu
    – Baking Soda as shampoo
    – ACV hair rinse as conditioner/ detangler / hair polisher 😉
  4. I workout from home –  pretty straight forward but I will be writing the reasons why I quit the gym in my next post (watch out for it on Saturday 7am PST)
  5. I bargain shop – I love pampering myself with expensive stuff every now and then but for things I use everyday, I enjoy getting a good deal! Whenever I go shopping I head straight to the sale aisle. And when it comes to clothing and accessories, I truly believe it’s not about how expensive it is but how you rock them! 🙂

What money-saving habits do you guys lean on? Please feel free to share I’d love to learn more ! 🙂

  1. Wow! We ladies sure rake up a lot of bills for beauty and all. I recently started taking note of this and how I spend. You did an awesome job with you hair. My blogger friend http://www.toyinwithfashion.com does her hair herself too and I’m thinking of trying it out too. I love trift, you find absolute gems for less. The truth is no matter how much we spend on outward appearance if we don’t feel good on the inside it amounts to nothing. Wish you and you husband, love, wisdom and bliss. Xx

  2. Self-care is so important for staying at the top of your physical, emotional and mental well-being. But it’s so cool when it comes to money-saving as well! Love your idea of using home-made remedies for health and beauty purposes, I’d love to try a baking soda instead od a shampoo! I am curious to see the result 🙂

  3. I do the same thing. It’s great to save money wherever you can. I also like to workout at home. Actually I posted about it as well. Working out at home you save lots of money and time and you have your privacy!

  4. Hi Katrina. I love your tips! I’m wondering how you used baking soda to wash hair? Do you mean as a dry shampoo? Also, what is ACV? I too, trim my own hair. But I’m not brave enough to forgo the hair dresser all the way. I get a professional cut about once a year. 🙂

  5. Great way to save money and these are practices that might seem small but over a long time period you can save so much! I like the idea of working out at home, at the gym I feel to shy, then quit!

  6. I do exactly the same. I’ve been dying my own hair since I was in high school. Sometimes I got funny results, especially when trying to combine different colors, but it was definitely worth it and a lot of fun. I also tried to cut my own hair, but that’s really not my thing. Sometimes I still trim them myself thought! These are all amazing tips to save some money!

  8. Right there with you. I used to cut my hair, but now I have it cut by a professional…but only about once or twice a year (I’m really bad at making appointments.) Love thrift shopping, too. I’m sooooo lucky that the largest thrift store in the U.S. is near where I live.
