5 Meditation Tips for Beginners

Hello Beautiful People,

I can’t believe I made it! I meditated every single day for 1 year (and still counting). 🙂

Those who have been following my blog and social media have heard and seen me mention my previous battle with depression and self-harm. This battle, although very ugly, ultimately led me to my saving grace: meditation. I shared the story of what led me to my first meditation practice here.

When I decided to meditate, I didn’t know that it would be something I’d do every single day. It took so long for me to give into meditation in the first place because I found it “too difficult” and “boring” to just sit still. There would be this nagging feeling of “I just gotta move or do something”. However, I knew I needed it. I was aware my mind was cluttered and I could not think straight from the brain glitch that’s happened from traumas and experiences piled up without release and/or a chance to take it all in. I decided to try it out for 7 days straight. Then 21 days (number of days it takes to develop a new habit), and then aimed for the whole month. Next thing I know, I wanted to keep it as a daily habit.

Now that I have a year of experience under my belt, I feel confident, ready, and happy to share my tips and what has helped me meditate my way out of the doom hole.

So let’s get started!

Meditation Tips for Beginners

  1. Start slow– And what I mean by this is, don’t overwhelm yourself by forcing yourself to meditate for 30 minutes right away when you haven’t sat still in silence your entire life. Aiming to do 30 minutes is a very honorable goal. However, it will take some practice to get there. So how did I do that? I started with short meditations. Below is one of my favorite 10 minute meditations by Positive Magazine Meditations. She produces 10 minute guided meditations regularly which has helped lift me up during my darkest days!

2. Start with Guided Meditations – Did you know that there are several kinds of meditation? If you didn’t, well now you do! 🙂 Among the different types, I have tried: Guided, Loving Kindness, Mindfulness, Body Scan, and Visualization. Each variety has a their own purpose but I found that for someone who’s just getting into this practice, guided meditations are the best. And guess what–you can find a guided version of each type! Below is one of my favorites. This 25 minute meditation by Power Thoughts Meditation Club is the very first meditation that I truly felt down to my core. This meditation video is the catalyst to me curating the playlist: My Best Life.

3. Meditate in a position that is most comfortable to you – A lot of times, when meditation is mentioned, we think of sitting in silence. While this is true, the most important is thing is that you’re able to relax. Personally, I have done a seated meditation successfully only a handful of times. I find that I am able to relax most when I am laying down with my entire body supported so that is my preference. I have also done meditation with my eyes open and even with me walking to work. All that matters is you are aware of your breath!

4. It’s ok to be distracted – I’ve had people tell me that they think they are meditating wrong because they get distracted and end up thinking instead of clearing space in the mind. Well let me tell you, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. In fact, it’s completely normal! Our brains are made to think which is why that’s what they do. When you find yourself getting distracted, don’t give up–just go back to your breath. 🙂 Below is one of my favorite affirmations for getting in the flow, spoken by Jason Stephenson.

5. It still counts even if you fall asleep – Yes you read that right, it still counts! Why? Because our subconscious brain is still listening and one of the main purpose of meditation is to give us the ability to be in a complete state of relaxation. Honestly when I have trouble sleeping I just pop a guided meditation and meditate my way to sleep. An alternative to a guided sleep meditation is listening to miracle healing tones. These tones are known to use frequencies that send relaxation and calm to the mind. Below is a Solfeggio sleep music that aids in DNA repair and positive transformation!

And those are my 5 tips! I hope it helped and if you have any questions, please never hesitate to ask! Meditation has changed my life for the better and I am confident it will do the same for you. A personal post dedicated to how what this practice has done for me can be found here.

Always appreciate your thoughts on my post!

  2. Meditation reduces stress related conditions such as anxiety and depression. When we meditate, the brain and nervous system undergo radical changes that cause the reduction and prevention of these conditions. Meditation increases stress resilience. These r great steps.

  5. I like that you added that part about being distracted. It’s easy to let your mind wander, and you’re right it is normal and certainly not a reason to give up.
